: president obama making remarks at funeral for former late hawaii senator daniel inouye. >> he would remain my senator until i left hawaii for college. now even though, even though my mother and grandparents took great pride that they had voted for him, i confessed that i wasn't paying much attention to the united states senate at the age of 4 or 5 or 6. it wasn't until i was 11 years old that i recall even learning what a u.s. senator was or, it registering at least t was during my summer vacation with my family. my first trip to what shows of us in hawaii call the mainland. so we flew over the ocean and with my mother and my grandmother and my sister who at the time was two, we traveled around the country. it's a big trip. we went to seattle and we went to disneyland, which was most important. we traveled to kansas where my grandmother's family was from and went to chicago and went to yellowstone. and we took greyhound buses most of the time and we rented cars and we would stay at local motels or howard johnson's. and if there was a pool at one of these motels, even if it was just tiny, i

-bye to hawaii senator daniel inouye. there's a special memorial service. the senate chaplain will deliver a sermon and you see president obama wiping tears from his eyes. he was the second longest serving senator in history. he served hawaii since 1959. that's where president obama grew up so he's well familiar with daniel inouye. he was awarded medal of honor after losing an arm in world war ii. it was at a hospital in recovery that he met bob dole. senator inouye was 88 years old. hawaii since statehood, 50 years in the u.s. senate. inouye died on monday. he was eulogized today by a fellow hawaiian himself once a senator, who spoke of first beginning to understand politics while watching senator inouye serve on a watergate committee. >> to see this man, this senator, this powerful, accomplished person who was not a central cast when it came to what you would think a senator might look like at the time, and the way he commanded the respect of an entire nation, i think it hinted to me what might be possible in my own life. this was a man who as a teenager stepped up to serve his country, even after his fellow japanese americans were declared enemy aliens. a man who believed in america, even when its government didn't necessarily believe in him. that meant something to me. it gave me a powerful sense, one that i couldn't put into words, a powerful sense of hope. >> president barack obama earlier today eulogizing daniel inouye, the long-serving u.s. senator died monday. he was 88 years old. >>> coming up next, i will speak with a woman who saw her parents killed

be interested to see. he was the pros -- supposed to leave for hawaii for his christmas vacation today. i do not think it would happen. this morning around 10:30 a.m. for the national -- at the national cathedral for the funeral. i did not know what he does next. democrats have been saying all along they were prepared to go over the cliff if they were not presented with a deal they thought was acceptable. i think it is possibly even at this point looks likely to happen. and then they would have to move on what is next. they always believed from a strategic perspective that if they went over the cliff, all of the taxes would expire and any thing the house republicans would pass from then on out would be a tax cut as opposed to a tax increase. this has been a rhetorical proposition that was put out by even senator patty murray as early as last july. the funny thing what is when you heard top republican talkers and leadership discussing the vote that was supposed to be happening last night that is how they phrased it. not a tax hike but letting rates rise on an income where it was already set t
